European ParliamentThe European Parliament is an important forum for political debate and decision-making at the EU level. The Members of the European Parliament are directly elected by voters in all Member States to represent people’s interests with regard to EU law-making and to make sure other EU institutions are working democratically.

Knowing EU Through the lectures of EU officials from different departments, I had a better understanding the structure of European Union, the function of its different departments, the economic situation and monetary policy, and most importantly, its relationship with Great China Region. To be honest, before this trip, I had never expected EU to pay any attention on Macau. I am so surprised by the well-developed relationship and numerous cooperating projects between EU and Macau. Besides, they specifically explained a project called “Erasmus+” to us, which is a program aiming at encouraging and assisting students in and outside Europe to have international exchange. This program really opened my mind that the destinations for studying abroad are more than just UK and US. Different from previous groups, our group was so lucky that we could have a tour inside the European Parliament. During the tour, our guide, who is a Portuguese, explained to us that legislation in EU has to be proposed by European Commission and approved by both the Council of the European Union and the European Parliament. Some people judge that such procedure is bureaucratic. In my opinion, this procedure may not be the most efficient way in legislation, but is definitely the most effective way in ensuring democracy and different voices to be well expressed and heard. |
